International Studies in Practice

During May, a group of IBEI students visited a number of organizations working in the field of international affairs in Barcelona, such as Creu Roja Catalunya, the Representation of the European Commission in BarcelonaMetropolis, the U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona, and the Union for the Mediterranean.

Creu Roja Catalunya

Red Cross is the world’s largest humanitarian network, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious belief, class or political opinion. The Spanish and Catalan Red Cross Societies have at their disposal a Human Rights Office and a Center for International Humanitarian Law whose main tasks are the research and promotion of peace and human rights, the dissemination and teaching of International Humanitarian Law and the spread of the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Representation of the European Commission in Barcelona

The Representation of the European Commission in Barcelona has various mandates such as to assist the Presidency and the entire Commission; or to promote permanent political dialogue with national, regional and local authorities; the parliaments; the social partners; other interested parties; academia, and civil society.

 

Metropolis

The World Association of Major Metropolises (Metropolis) is an international association of global cities and metropolitan areas working towards developing solutions to issues affecting large cities such as urban planning and development. Its Secretariat-General is based in Barcelona.

U.S. Consulate General in Barcelona

Presentation about the Consulate functions, held by Nichole Finnemann, Public Affairs Officer.

The Consulate General provides services to a consular district made up of the Autonomous Communities of Catalonia and Aragon. Likewise, it represents the diplomatic and consular interests of the United States in the Principality of Andorra. Founded in 1797, it is one of the oldest in the world.

Union for the Mediterranean

UfM is an intergovernmental Euro-Mediterranean organisation which brings together all countries of the European Union and 15 countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. Its mission is to enhance regional cooperation, dialogue and the implementation of projects and initiatives with tangible impact on our citizens.

Students were guided by the Alumni João Lobo (Master's in International Relations), currently working as Project Analyst at Union for the Mediterranean.
